Start with the bucket test: fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step, and mark both water levels. After 24 hours, if your pool has lost more water than the bucket, you likely have a leak rather than normal evaporation. From there, a professional can use pressure testing and dye testing to pinpoint exactly where the leak is coming from — whether it’s in the shell, the plumbing, or the equipment. If you suspect a leak, the sooner you get it checked, the less water (and money) you lose.
Once the leak is located, a technician carefully cuts into the concrete slab to access and fix the problem at its source. After the repair is complete, the slab is resealed and patched, restoring it to its original condition. Shifting ground is one of the most common causes of under-slab leaks, so a proper repair addresses the source, not just the symptoms.
Locating a pool leak usually starts by determining whether the leak is in the structure (shell, fittings, or skimmer) or in the plumbing. Professionals use a combination of pressure testing—pressurizing the plumbing lines to detect drops that indicate a breach—and dye testing, where a small amount of dye is released near suspected areas to see if it is pulled toward a crack or gap. Electronic listening equipment can also detect escaping water underground. DIY leak hunting can help you spot surface-level cracks, but for leaks in the plumbing or underground, professional detection equipment is the only reliable way to find the source.
