Why Is My Water Bill So High? How Your Pool May Be Costing You Money

A water bill that climbs without any change in usage usually means you have unnoticed water loss, and if you have a pool, that should be the first place you look. One hidden leak in your pool can waste gallons of water a day, and that spike will show right on your bill.

What’s Causing the Spike?

For Dallas homeowners, common causes tend to include:

  • A pool leak causing water to escape underground
  • Irrigation running longer than it needs to
  • A running toilet or leaking fixture inside your home
  • Normal evaporation during hotter months

Signs the Leak Is Your Pool

Not sure it’s the pool? These are the signs we see most often on Dallas pools:

  • Water dropping faster than normal evaporation
  • Soft or wet spots in the yard, or cracks near the deck and coping
  • Equipment that runs constantly, or an auto-fill that never shuts off

One of these may not mean anything, but noticing a few at once strongly points to a leak that needs attention.

A Quick Test You Can Do Today

The bucket test gives you a quick read on whether your pool is losing more water than normal:

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on your pool’s step so it’s partly submerged.
  2. Mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool wall.
  3. Leave the pump running as usual for 24 hours.
  4. Compare the two levels, and if the pool lost more water than the bucket, you probably have a leak.

This is not a diagnosis. Use our water loss calculator to get a better look at how much you’re really losing.
