Signs of a Pool Leak

7 Signs Your Pool Has a Leak

Is your pool telling you something is wrong? Here’s what to look out for.

Pool leaks can start silently, showing up as a higher water bill, a soggy patch of yard, or a pool that never seems full. By the time it’s obvious, the damage is already done.

These are the signs to catch it early.

Pools lose no more than a quarter inch of water per day to evaporation. More than that points to a leak.

A leak can waste thousands of gallons before you see any other symptom. If your bill crept up and nothing changed inside the house, check the pool.

Soft spots in the lawn, standing water near the equipment pad, or grass that’s greener than the rest of the yard all suggest water is escaping underground.

Cracks deeper than the plaster layer, gaps around fittings, or separation at the steps or walls are worth having looked at.

Escaping water erodes the soil beneath the deck over time. Cracking or settling concrete, especially near the coping, is a sign.

Constant dilution from refilling throws off water chemistry. If you’re going through chemicals faster than normal, water loss may be why.

Air in the system from a plumbing leak causes pressure drops and pump strain. A noisier pump or one that keeps losing prime is worth investigating.
